The story behind Pack Lion and the road ahead!

For years the conversation about the sustainability has been the hottest topic on the table. But as fast as we move away from the sweet talks with our friends and family, we tend to nothing about it.

Digging deeper into the topic, we are stepping in the epicenter of the problem, the media’s most beloved scapegoat – the litter packaging. Islands of floating plastic packaging, giant skyscrapers of unrecyclable packaging, polluted beaches bursting with packaging, turtles and whales wrapped up with….yes you guessed it - packaging.

But looking closer to the problem, it seems most of the media hype and greenwashing attention is directed towards the idea of how to deal with the packaging after it has served its purpose, and in particular, after it is thrown away on land or in the ocean.

And it seems that nobody is tackling the very origin of the problem – why making packaging that pollutes in first place?

Why not focus on making packaging that doesn’t harm the environment and can be recycled, reused and decomposed, eventually.

So, instead of constantly thinking how to get rid of excess packaging around the globe, let’s focus on how NOT to make packaging that is polluting the very same planet we all live on.

All of our team members at Pack Lion have a solid background in the packaging industry, coming straight from packaging factories and plants, having dealt with the matter on hand for years.

When we started this project five years ago, we all shared the same old stories from our previous jobs – they were all about how much packaging we would sell, so we can hit the sales targets, rather than educating our clients on how to purchase packaging that WILL NOT pollute and harm the environment.

So, this was the very reason why Pack Lion came to life – we were fed up with the pretense.

In 2015, a small group of packaging heads (you know, little like petrol heads, but much more boring :) founded Pack Lion – a packaging supplier, strictly focused on providing eco-friendly packaging to its clients.

Back then we all agreed that we will work towards sustainability of the products we sell without compromising our believes that we can change the planet for the better.

And so we started working on the issue.

Our first priority was to provide our clients with every possible eco-friendly packaging feature.

Five years ago there was literally no one out there delivering easily transformable and useful eco-friendly options and benefits for packaging. Most were just product concepts, high flying Ph.D. with theories and a bunch of VC hunters, selling hopes and dreams.

There was nothing that could have been utilized by the customer.

It was a real nightmare…

So, we started from ground zero with only one mission in mind - to find and collect all available eco-friendly options and put it all together for everyone to experience. Some of these were surprisingly easy to acquire (like the great advantages of cardboard itself – recyclability, bio-degradability, etc.), others required a much more complex approach (like FSC Fosterisation Council and Co2 Neutral Climate Partner certifications).

At the end we came up with a quite solid list of eco benefits for our customers’ packaging needs.

But then we faced another setback.

Now we had it all eco-friendly, but our sales process was atrocious.

As everybody else in the packaging business, we were manually writing thousands of offers for our clients. As you can imagine, this was a time consuming activity, to say the least...

People were waiting for days to get their quotes and if they had to change some minor stuff in the specs, it all had to start from the beginning – another couple of days and so on and so forth.

At the very best we were closing a client within a month – a very furious client in all honest, an inpatient client who lost a month just to get to the point of purchasing.

And then came the other another nightmare – the additional accumulated costs. The likes of die lines charges, tool costs, prepress fees and many more, all piling up prior to order.

So we had to put it all together – in a place where you can easily pick your eco boxes, customize them and get an instant quote, without any hidden costs or charges. This would save tons of time and money for our clients.

This is where we had to step up and get really innovative – we knew we needed a web platform, where people can do all the above with a few clicks and get their boxes on time.

We knew that we have to move from the comfort zone of packaging specialists and learn with the speed of light how the e-commerce concept works and how it can be adopted for packaging configurations and sales.

Fast forward to 2020 and www.thepacklion.com was born.

And this is where we are totally good at – packaging production!
